“Rise for Henoko” Photo Series

Henoko, Okinawa, 2020

These photos were all taken during my time covering the demilitarization and Indigenous rights movement in Oura Bay, Okinawa. Thousands of Uchinānchu (Indigenous Okinawan) elders, war survivors, and activists are risking their lives daily to protect our community’s oceans and lands from irreversible destruction.

To learn more about the demilitarization movement and the Uchinānchu community’s demands, visit riseforhenoko.org.
